DAY TWO – TAN
.
CARTMEL AND KENDAL
Coniston – Brantwood – Haverthwaite –
Cartmel – Grange-over-Sands –
Sizergh Castle – Kendal – Staveley
‘We pedalled on, dodging puddles while trying to glance at Coniston Water. The lake was high by the side of the road, with trees standing in water, while full-to-bursting streams were flooding down through beech woods on the left. There was no traffic at all, and with just a few ups and downs, it was a lovely road to cycle.
A couple of miles along the lakeshore brought us to little Peel Island standing proud of a promontory and, just beyond, we stopped by a reed-filled bay to look back. We were in Swallows and Amazons country.’
